In order to become an optometric technician, you must have a degree by enrolling in a learning institution that provides the appropriate optic program. Once you become a student, there are numerous optometric technician courses to tackle and complete during the course of the program. These are essential to the practice of optometric technicians.

Optometric technician students will usually have optometric technician courses like the anatomy and physiology, as well as the disorders of the human eye. Other optometric technician courses include optics, optometric procedures, optician practices, and contact lenses. In class, students will take optometric technician courses involving proper prescription for lenses, examination of the eye of the patient for damage, and other ophthalmic procedures. Optometric technician courses will also teach students how to use eye instruments used in an eye examination. A keen sense of knowledge in geometry is also required as the optometric technician courses include mastery of refraction of light.

Aside from knowledge, students in optometric technician courses will be graded by skill through clinical exposures and other practicum areas. Students are required to learn the principles and techniques in performing contact lens care and hygiene as part of the optometric technician courses. Proper eyewear surfacing and molding is also a course to be mastered. In addition, students should be able to develop an attractive aesthetic appearance for eyewear. This would help promote the saleability of the eyewear when working in the future. Being a requirement in optometric technician courses, students must demonstrate the ability to prescribe and repair spectacles.

Office procedures in practice, such as telephone etiquette, bookkeeping, billing, records, appointment systems, and computer proficiency, are important courses to master to fulfill the administrative role of the optometric technician.
